What’s your HERS score? One number can really add up.
The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index is kind of like putting your home through energy efficiency school.
As the industry standard for measuring a home’s energy efficiency, HERS scores your home based on comprehensive software modeling and in-person testing to determine how it stacks up against other homes around the nation. The lower the score, the more efficient the home. A typical new home has a score of 100. That means a HERS Index Score of 70 would be 30 percent more efficient than a standard new home, while a score of 130 would be 30 percent less efficient.
Consumers Energy customers living in ultra-efficient ENERGY STAR® certified new homes scored 53 on average last year—an astounding 47 percent more efficient than typical homes. To see how your current home uses energy, visit our Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program website.
